A Little Bit About Retford
According to rumour, the town of Retford got its name from a local muddy ford that would turn red once horses would pass through it. This has never been confirmed, unfortunately.
The ancient market town of Retford was ‘bestowed’ with its inaugural charter (the right to host a fair) by Henry III in 1246. Since then, the privilege was extended by Edward I in 1275 to permit a Saturday market, a tradition that still exists to this day! The town’s landscape has lots of majestic Georgian architecture, an ample public square, as well as two theatres: the Little Theatre on Wharf Road and the Majestic on Coronation Street.
